It saddens me to say it, but this will be my last purchase of a Julia Quinn novel. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and The Duke and I are two of my all-time favorite romance novels, but JQ stopped being an auto-buy for me long ago, when it became obvious that her effort (or maybe inspiration) had disappeared. I had high hopes for this one, since it's a prequel to the Bridgerton series. Maybe the old JQ magic was back, I thought. No. Sadly, not the case.

To be perfectly honest, I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of JQ's editors. They know this plot is paper-thin. They know the internal and external dialogue meanders along for waaaay too long. They know these characters are stock reiterations of previous JQ heroes and heroines. But somewhere along the way, they obviously decided to coast on the author's former glory. Because suckers like me will still pony up $7 in the misguided hope that these books will actually contain something resembling a plot, with conflict, sexual tension and unique, fully-developed characters. Nope. What we get instead is pages and pages (and pages) of asinine non-sequiturs and supposedly witty dialogue that does absolutely nothing to move the plot forward. There are at least three or four instances in this book when a character asks another, "What's wrong?" And the character responds, "Nothing." AND THEY MEAN IT. There is actually nothing wrong with them. It's filler. JQ has reached her word count.

I wouldn't even recommend this one to die-hard Bridgerton fans. It's a tepid carbon-copy of that series, so I'd just suggest re-reading the Bridgerton series and preserving your love for the JQ of old.

Do you love snark, wicked banter and quirky characters? Then you will adore Billie Bridgerton and her exchanges with George. Billie is intelligent, strong and quite different from the other girls in society. She is known to wear britches, and prefers to be outdoors in the sun! I adored Billie from our first encounter, and as soon as George Rokesby entered the picture, I knew he was perfect for her.

The Rokesby and Bridgertons are close friends and neighbors. While George is slightly older, Billie grew up playing with Mary, Edward, and Andrew. Billie and George have this whole haters thing going. She sees him as arrogant and annoying. He thinks she is outlandish and wild, but when he rescues her, he begins to see that there is so much more to Billie.

Quinn has this delightful gift for making her characters feel real and allowing the reader to become swept up. From a game of Mallard to time spent in the library we are delighted with snark, good humor and a sense of the love these families feel for each other.

The romance was a slow burn as both characters saw the other in a new light. It was exciting experiencing all of the firsts with them. Of course, they are both stubborn, and there is some denial. I loved the jealous moments, the miscommunication and stolen kisses.

I simply cannot wait for Andrews story.
This book was boring. I finished it but it was boring. I felt like I was reading the same story as all her other books. Sad because she once was one of my favorite authors
I hate to say it but I was slightly disappointed with this book. Since I wasn't too impressed with Ms. Quinn's 'Smythe-Smith Quartet' I didn't immediately jump on this story, though I was so hoping it would have the feel of the original Bridgerton novels to it. Unfortunately, for me it didn't live up to that family's high standard, though the heroine is the aunt to the siblings from that series. My main criticism is the lack of a real plot which often made it slow moving. It's hard to even describe this story, except to say its about Sybilla "Billie" Bridgerton and George Rokesby, neighbors who've known each other their whole lives but haven't always liked or understood each other. After being stranded together for a short time, they begin to see another side to each other and since this is a romance, they inevitably fall in love...

I will say that for there not being much of a plot, the dialogue did keep me entertained for the most part, since nobody does charm or wit better than JQ. There was the classic Pall Mall game that was cut short but put a smile on my face nonetheless since Billie definitely got her fair share of the Bridgerton competitive streak. Although it took me until about halfway through to get a feel for she and George and I did end up really liking them, neither ever tugged at my heart. Their romance was sweet with a few kisses and an average love scene at the very end, but I didn't feel the chemistry or passion I was hoping for. There was also a bit of spying and espionage late in, which felt out of place and simply contrived for added drama. Still, I'll probably read the next Rokesby brothers story, even though this one fell a bit short.
Tepid, without plot or purpose. Apparently two people fell in love and found themselves, I didn't notice. I bought this book because the library didn't have it and entirely regret the choice. Considering I had recently re-read "When He was Wicked" it really remphasized how downhill her plotting had gone. A book where nothing happens, but there's plot and growth and change in the characters. JQ can write, she just hasn't bothered to here.
