New York Times Bestseller The “extraordinary” true story of a golden eagle adopted by a California ranching family, and how she changed their lives (Delia Ephron).
In 1955, Ed Durden brought a baby golden eagle home to his ranch in California, where she would stay for the next sixteen years. As her bond with Ed and the Durden family grew, the eagle, named Lady, displayed a fierce intelligence and strong personality. She learned quickly, had a strong mothering instinct (even for other species), and never stopped surprising those who cared for her.

An eight-week New York Times bestseller, Gifts of an Eagle is a fascinating up-close look at one of the most majestic creatures in nature, as well as a heartwarming family story and “an affectionate, unsentimental tribute” (Kirkus Reviews).
Gifts of an Eagle The Remarkable Story of a Bird and Her Family Kent Durden
Read the book on Kindle but also have the actual book and DVD. A wonderful story of the relationship between man and eagle. The relationship was pretty much equal especially in the eagle's eyes. I'd recommend reading the book first and then watching the DVD since there is much more detail in the book.I also soar in gliders and frequently have hawks, vultures and seagulls sharing and circling in the same thermal I would be flying in. I never cease to marvel at their beauty and total grace and ease in the air. Seeing an eagle close up is really something. This book just brings the eagle to life.
Note that the kindle version appears to place all the pictures at the end while in the book it appears after several different sections. In this case it is much easier to flip back and forth in the actual book. A very small nitpick to an overall great experience both kindle and actual book.
If you like this book you will also love "Wesley the Owl".
Highly recommended.

Gifts of an Eagle The Remarkable Story of a Bird and Her Family Kent Durden Reviews
For any one who doubts the intelligence of birds, this book will prove enlightening. It is a story told with both a sense of humor and a sense of wonder. You may have seen this eagle in several Disney movies, but now you can learn how she was trained. Totally enjoyable.
Never thought eagles had such great intelligence. This book shows the range and ability to learn of a Golden eagle. Even though it was written years ago It is still true today. An amazing story.
This book was such a pleasure to read. Totally entertaining and endearing. Lots of interesting facts told in the wittiest way with a good measure of suspense utilized to tell the tale. Do not hesitate to try this book. I have bought copies for all of my naturalist friends to rave reviews.
A great story and great information about eagles without reading like a textbook. I found much humor in their story of Lady as well as a very moving account of those 16 years.
My dad gave me this book that he read as a kid when I was younger. I wanted to reread it while I was on the go so I purched the kindle version. The story overall is very entertaining. The writer, as he states, is not a writer so the story isnt as embelished or fancy as it could be. Reading this book is like listening to your grandpas stories. I really enjoy it still.
I love this book! Who knew a book about eagles could be so highly entertaining? I bought the book for my classroom and, being the dutiful teacher, I read it first. I laughed, I smiled and I lived vicariously through the author's telling of his experiences. Gifts of an Eagle was a joy to read!
If you like eagles and like humor, this is the book of choice!
I literally could not put this book down until finished and for 5 to 6 times, the funny situations described by Kent Durden about Lady the eagle that my belly laugh just could not stop!
The new book price is way over-charged, so I got an old book, ended up tossing the dirty book cover and bought a new book cover, but I still consider this book excellent and worth re-reading, a very well written account of this amazing eagle!
