As always I am surprised by the amount of 4 and 5 star reviews for this book bc, wow, so many problems with it. Spoilers: First and foremost 2 and 4 yr olds do not speak in complete sentences and have very little reasoning skills. The children in this book were more like 8. Second, I hated the angst the author created over how they felt about each other bc of the best friend deceased wife angle. Third, when someone is deployed there is a guardianship issue for their children that clearly outlines the aspect of this guardianship and if it doesn't then they didn't have a very good lawyer write it up. This does not automatically give 'custody' of them to their guardians and should clearly state that said children would be returned to the physical custody of the parent. Grandparent rights are very limited here and DO NOT supersede parental rights and there would never have been a question as to custody but I knew I would have a problem with that before I read the book. The final thing for me was that I HATED her father and why anyone would put up with that absolutely abusive treatment of them at that age is beyond me. Really, what century is this idiot living in? He goes to find his long lost son that has been gone for more than 20 yrs and he gives everything to him? With absolutely no loyalty to his other children? That whole thing was so stupid that I almost stopped reading this absolutely terrible book. I read books to feel good with a happy ending and this one left me feeling angry at the injustice of the father's treatment of his daughters and frankly the long lost brothers treatment of his sisters. I am sure the author is going to write his story at some point but I just don't care. There is no justice in this book imo and I won't be reading her again.

Well written book that can be read as a stand alone, but still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. I am sure as the series progresses that we will find some of the answere. This is Connor and Eve's story. Eve is a Grayhawk and Connor is a Flynn. Not exactly sure what started the feud, but it must have been a doozie for it to have continued for so long. Would have liked a little more heat between the main characters to make it seem more real. Basically a clean read.
This was a great book. I loved the storyline. The hero and heroine were favorites of mine. All the characters were well written and I look forward to reading more about them in future books. This is what I think of as a family saga series. Not sure if that's correct, but very much a soap opera feel. This was a complete story, just the other characters need their story told to tie up loose ends. Now I should read the first books in the Bitter Creek series to figure out the backstory?
This is the 1st book I've read by this author and I did enjoy it. But, I agree with a couple other reviewers about the fathers. This book should have been written as a historical western, not modern day. King brought in Matt and is leaving all his girls out in the cold?? Really! A bit unrealistic. I enjoyed it enough to want to read the other books, i liked all the characters. I see the next book is priced at $7.99. At that price I will not be able to read each story if any of them. Too pricey for me I am sorry to say. For me to pay that price the book would have to be written by one of my top favorite authors like Kristen Ashley or Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Both of these writers are masters at writing continuing family serials.
From my understanding and what I gathered from the prolog, there was supposed to be a double story in this book. Matt and his taking on Kingdom Come and possibly his reasons for leaving were hinted in the prolog - then mostly ignored for the story of Eve and Conner. It was a good tale but I feel cheated over the lack of Matt vs King story.
I do enjoy series where you meet characters in other books...but not when the work you are reading leaves the reader wondering why the current story was not completed. Very bad of you, Joan. I hope this is not going to become a habit - if you bring a character into a story with his/her tale being part of the current tale...finish the tale.
There was so much of interest in this book. I have always had an interest in wild mustangs and I hate what the government is doing to so many of them. Thanks to Ms. Johnston for bringing it to the attention of more people. Also, the need for 'safe harbors' for many of our wounded vets is great and I love that she has also brought that up.

The story line of the two powerful families at odds with each other is fascinating. The two bitter and controlling old men who head these
families make life miserable for their children in so many ways. I am looking forward to reading the stories of each of the children and see how they break loose from their fathers. This first story was interesting and had strong characters. I enjoyed seeing the main leads interact with each other and their families. But, for me, the plot was a little on the distasteful side for having the hero and heroine in love with each other since high school even though the hero married the best friend of the heroine. It just made me cringe a little each time it was brought up. That said, I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I hope it doesn't take too long for Matt's story to arrive.
First off I loved the book but only gave it three stars due to the fact that it is a cliffhanger. It practically stops in the middle of a paragraph. I do not buy cliffhangers because I hate to wait for more in the series to come out so that I can read one book.... It would have been a lot better if the author had finished Conner and Eves story making it a stand alone. Also there is no where stating that this is a cliffhanger. There are however plenty of book reviews posted, actually with the exception of the summary all there is are reviews and a small section about the author. I have read several of her books but this one may change my mind. I hate when something is pumped up like this one was and it was such a let down to have to wait. I buy books for a reason, to read them. I don't like to buy half a book then wait for the rest to come out.
